Majority Leader opposes proposal for MPs' hospital and new chamber
A proposal by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for the establishment of a dedicated hospital for Members of Parliament (MPs) and the construction of a new parliamentary chamber has been met with strong opposition from Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga.
The debate emerged during the swearing-in of the Parliamentary Service Board on Monday, March 17, where Afenyo-Markin also a Member of Parliament for Effutu argued that lawmakers required a specialized healthcare facility to cater to their medical needs.
He also reignited discussions on the need for a new parliamentary chamber, emphasizing that both initiatives were essential to improving MPs' working conditions.
However, Mahama Ayariga dismissed the proposals, citing Ghana’s economic struggles as a key reason why such projects would be unjustifiable at this time.
He stressed that given the country’s pressing financial challenges, prioritizing a new chamber and an MPs-only hospital was unwarranted.
