Police at the Manhyia District Command clashed with protesting supporters of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who sieged the station to demand the release of one of their colleague demonstrators in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region on Sunday, 20 December 2020.

The angry mob of protestors set up a bonfire and hurled stones and other crude weapons at the police.

The police had to use water cannons to douse the flames and keep the protestors at bay.

The protestors claim the Electoral Commission stole the elections for President Nana Akufo-Addo and insist the election management body must declare the results in favour of the NDC’s presidential candidate, former President John Mahama or there would be no peace.

There have been several similar demonstrations across the country, since the elections were held on 7 December 2020 and the results declared on 9 December.

The Manhyia District Police Command, however, denied arresting any of the protestors despite the insistence of the mob – a stalemate, which, eventually, led to an escalation of events.

“They stormed the police charge office. They were claiming that one of the protesters had been arrested here which was not correct. It was completely false”, DSP Charles Appiah, a Crime Officer at the Manhyia Divisional Police Command told journalists.

He said: “Several police officers were hit with a stone and a vehicle was also damaged”.
