NALAG President urges President Mahama to prioritise experienced Assembly Members and women in MMDCE appointments

The President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Mr. Alfred Asiedu Adjei, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize the appointment of experienced Assembly Members and women in the selection of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and government-appointed Assembly Members.
In a statement addressed to the President, Mr. Asiedu Adjei commended President Mahama for his commitment to strengthening local governance and decentralization.
He described the revocation of the appointments of the previous MMDCEs and government appointees as an opportunity to reinvigorate Ghana’s grassroots governance structure.
The NALAG President emphasized the critical role of Assembly Members as the backbone of local governance, citing their deep understanding of community challenges and aspirations.
“By appointing seasoned Assembly Members to key positions, the government can enhance local development, promote continuity, and strengthen leadership at the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs),” he stated.
Mr. Asiedu Adjei argued that these individuals possess institutional knowledge and leadership experience that would ensure effective policy implementation and grassroots engagement.
Mr. Asiedu Adjei also called on President Mahama to prioritize gender equity in governance by increasing the representation of women among MMDCEs and government-appointed Assembly Members.
He highlighted the unique perspectives and resilience women bring to leadership, noting that their involvement is essential for inclusive and sustainable governance.
“Appointing more women into leadership roles will foster inclusive development, fulfil Ghana’s international commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and inspire future generations to break barriers,” he added.
The NALAG President described the moment as pivotal for Ghana’s decentralization journey and urged President Mahama to use these appointments as a transformative precedent.
“These strategic appointments will not only fortify the capacity of MMDAs but also enhance public trust and grassroots participation in governance,” Mr. Asiedu Adjei asserted.
The NALAG President assured the government of the Association’s unwavering support for its efforts to strengthen decentralization and promote national development.
He concluded by wishing President Mahama well in his leadership and expressed hope for a collaborative effort to create a better future for all Ghanaians.
