NDC flagbearer race: When I get to the bridge, I will cross it -Eric Opoku

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has left the door open on his ambitions to succeed President John Dramani Mahama as flagbearer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on the Citizen Show on Accra 100.5 FM on Friday, August 22, 2025, Mr. Opoku said he would not rush into making declarations about his political future but would “cross the bridge when the time comes.”
According to him, leadership in the NDC has always been determined through divine providence and the will of the grassroots.
“God has a way of choosing leaders for the NDC over the years, and if that favour falls on me, why not? I will gladly accept it,” he stated.
“Sometimes, when leaders are chosen, some may dislike the decision, but it becomes what everyone must rally behind to win the next election.
If the party’s grassroots decides I should lead them, I will lead them.”
For now, however, Mr. Opoku stressed that his priority remains the success of Ghana’s agricultural sector, which he described as a key driver of the government’s 24-hour economy policy.
He outlined initiatives aimed at boosting food production and innovation, including a new National Farmers’ Day award category that will recognise basic and second-cycle schools excelling in agriculture.
He added that their farm produce will be showcased on national television to highlight the role of young people in farming.
Mr. Opoku emphasised that strengthening agriculture would not only support the economy but also provide relief to Ghanaians amid rising living costs.
