NE/R: NPP suspends two executives in Walewale over allegations of gross misconduct

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended two of its constituency executives in Walewale, North-East Region.
The executives were suspended along with a party member over allegations of gross misconduct.
This suspension, which takes immediate effect, was announced in a letter issued by the Regional Chairman, Fuseini Nurudeen.
According to the letter, the suspended individuals are required to hand over any party materials in their possession while an investigation into their conduct is carried out.
The decision comes in the wake of a recent ruling by the High Court in Tamale, which ordered a re-run of the Walewale constituency parliamentary primary.
This came on the back of a legal challenge by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hajia Lariba Zuweratu.
The ruling, delivered by Justice Richard Kogyapwah on Monday, 2 September 2024, comes just days before the deadline for filing nominations for the December 7 general election.
Justice Kogyapwah stated that the full judgment will be read on Thursday, 12 September 2024.
The decision followed an earlier injunction placed on Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru in June 2024, preventing him from holding himself as the elected parliamentary candidate for Walewale.
Dr. Kabiru, a 35-year-old PhD holder and Vice Presidential special advisor, narrowly defeated Hajia Lariba in a hotly contested primary held in January, winning by 345 votes to 338.
The election was conducted under tight security, with regional and constituency executives present.
Hajia Lariba rejected the outcome, filing an ex parte motion at the Tamale High Court, alleging electoral irregularities and malpractice involving Dr. Kabiru, the party, and the Electoral Commission.
The court granted her request for an injunction.
The NPP initially sought to dismiss the case, arguing that Hajia Lariba had violated the party's constitution by not exhausting internal conflict resolution mechanisms before approaching the court.
Meanwhile, the party has announced the primary will be held on Sunday, 8 September 2024.
This was contained in a statement signed by its General Secretary detailing the new election schedule.
According to the statement, the timelines are as follows: nominations will open on Tuesday, 3 September 2024, and close on Thursday, 5 September 2024.
Aspiring candidates must secure nomination forms by paying a non-refundable application fee of GHS3,000 via banker's draft.
To file their nominations, candidates will need to pay a non-refundable filing fee of GHS35,000, also in banker's draft.
Also, the NPP has introduced a 50 per cent rebate on the filing fees for women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
This group will be required to pay a reduced non-refundable filing fee of GHS17,500.
