NPP polls: Polling station executives fight Kennedy Kankam’s solo run

Kennedy Kankam, MP, Nhyiaeso

Members of the concerned polling station executives and opinion leaders of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Nhyiaeso constituency of the Ashanti Region have appealed to President Akufo-Addo to allow the aspiring parliamentary candidate for the area, Stephen Amoah, to contest in the primaries.

The aggrieved members say they have heard the Second Vice-Chairman of the party, Mr F.F. Anto, say the President has asked Mr Stephen Amoah to step down for the incumbent MP, Kennedy Kankam, to contest unopposed.

Describing it as unacceptable, members of the group, numbering over 400, said they do not understand why the President will ask the MASLOC boss, who has served the party and contributed massively, to step down.

They said Mr Stephen Amoah has exhausted all the processes regarding picking and submission of nomination forms and now occupies the first position on the ballot paper.

They, therefore, want President Akufo-Addo and the bigwigs of the party to allow Mr Stephen Amoah to contest in the primaries since, according to them, the sitting MP has brought division in the constituency.

The angry group said they will advise themselves if Mr Amoah is forced to step down.

Addressing the media at a press conference on Tuesday, 28 May 2020, Mr Charles Oduro, a polling station secretary said: “We have heard that some bigwigs of our party are doing everything possible to make sure that Stephen Amoah steps down so that honourable Kankam will go unopposed.

“We had information that Mr F.F. Anto, the second vice-chairman of our great party called Stephen Amoah and said Nana Akufo-Addo called him to ask him to step down. When we got the information, we were very surprised that’s why we are saying that we will do everything possible to let them the people on the ground know what is happening at Nhyiaeso constituency. As for our president, he is a very listening president, we respect him and, we also respect the people on the ground…we are appealing to him as the president and the leaders of our party to help the people of Nhyiaeso so that we get Mr Stephen Amoah to be given the chance to compete in the election…”
