The flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of orchestrating a covert campaign of fake news aimed at damaging his reputation ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Speaking during a visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Tuesday, 3 December 2024, as part of his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, Mr Mahama alleged that the government’s disinformation strategy reflects desperation as its campaign struggles to gain traction.

“The seat of government knows about the recent propagation of fake news… Because their campaign has failed, they have resorted to lying and propagating fake news,” Mr Mahama stated.

He dismissed recent allegations tying him to an attack on his convoy in Techiman as baseless, urging the Asantehene to disregard such claims. He described the accusations as an attempt to sow discord and discredit his candidacy.

Mr Mahama reaffirmed his dedication to peaceful campaigning and called for credible elections, urging all political stakeholders to prioritise unity and the national interest over divisive rhetoric.

“I know God knows everyone’s heart, and just as He enstools kings, He will have mercy on us and enstool His king,” he added, expressing faith in divine justice.
