The Minority in Parliament has expressed serious concern over the persistent absenteeism of Majority members, particularly from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), despite their numerical advantage in the House.

According to the Minority, the NDC, which boasts a supermajority of 189 Members of Parliament (MPs), should have no difficulty forming a quorum to conduct parliamentary business. However, their frequent absence is reportedly hampering proceedings and delaying the consideration of important government business.

MP for Damango, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, described the situation as both embarrassing and unfortunate, questioning why Majority Members were failing to take their responsibilities seriously.

He noted that even in instances where ministers were away on official duties, the Majority still had more than enough numbers to proceed with business without relying on the Minority.

“With the kind of majority they have, there should be no excuse for failing to form a quorum. This level of absenteeism is disappointing and disrespectful to the Ghanaian people,” he stated.

The Minority emphasised that the current situation was obstructing the passage of key bills and delaying the smooth conduct of parliamentary affairs.

They urged the Majority to show greater commitment to their duties and cooperate with the Minority to ensure the effective running of the House.

Samuel Jinapor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) further drew a comparison with the Eighth Parliament, where the then-Minority (NDC), despite having fewer members, consistently showed up to work and participated actively in proceedings.

He cautioned that continued absenteeism would undermine public confidence in Parliament and ultimately affect governance.

“The Ghanaian people expect diligence and seriousness from their representatives. Parliament’s work cannot progress if those with the majority are not present to do their part,” he added.
