Police arrests 12 suspects in Chereponi riots
The police command in the North East Region has arrested 12 suspects in connection with the riots that took place in Chereponi following the announcement of Zuwera Mada Nashiru as the District Chief Executive for that part of the country on 19 September 2021.
The suspects were arrested in a raid led by the regional commander and three senior officers on Tuesday, 21 September 2021.
They were paraded at the regional police station in Nalerigu.
The 12 suspects are believed to be part of the horde of angry youth of the governing New Patriotic Party in the area who went on the rampage and destroyed some property because their preferred candidate S. K. Orlando was snubbed.
The timely intervention of the district police command de-escalated the tension.
The police said when they got wind of the disturbances, the command invited the Chereponi Constituency Chairman of the NPP, Mr Aliu Sulemana, and some of the youth leaders for an amicable solution.
The police said the youth promised to keep the peace and go by the Public Order Act and notify the police accordingly, should they intend to organise a demonstration.
Earlier, the NPP had urged its supporters, especially party executives at the grassroots level, to accept the list of MMDCEs in good fate.
“Every nominee on the list is selected by the President”, Director of Communications Yaw Buaben Asamoa said at a press conference on Friday, 17 September 2021, adding that “we expect the party grassroots executives to trust his judgement and support the approval process for these nominees."
“Of course”, he noted, “not everyone will have their preferred choice, however, we believe that as much as possible, every eligible candidate must have had a fair bite of the election process.”
