Police supervise destruction of recalled ballot papers for Eastern and Western Regions
The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Eastern Regional Elections Security Taskforce, has supervised the destruction of ballot papers recalled by the Electoral Commission (EC) from the Eastern and Western Regions.
The exercise, conducted on the morning of Tuesday followed the EC’s decision to withdraw and dispose of the ballot papers due to errors and defects.
The destruction was aimed at ensuring the integrity and security of the electoral process as Ghanaians prepare to vote in the general elections on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
Officials from the Electoral Commission, representatives of political parties, and election observers were present to witness the destruction process, which was carried out under strict security protocols.
Speaking at the event, a representative of the Eastern Regional Elections Security Taskforce emphasized the importance of the exercise in maintaining public trust in the electoral system.
“The destruction of these recalled ballot papers is a critical step in ensuring that only valid materials are used during the elections.
This demonstrates our collective commitment to a free, fair, and transparent process,” the representative stated.
Representatives from the major political parties expressed satisfaction with the process, commending the Electoral Commission and the security agencies for their transparency.
“We are pleased with the level of transparency shown during this exercise.
The Electoral Commission has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections.
This includes the replacement of the destroyed ballot papers with new ones, which have already been dispatched to the affected regions.
