Speaker cautions Majority against abusing supermajority

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has issued a stern reminder to the Majority Caucus not to abuse its overwhelming numerical advantage in the House.
Speaking during proceedings on Tuesday, the Speaker emphasised the importance of inclusivity and urged the Majority to ensure that the Minority is always given the space to express its views.
“Democracy thrives not just on numbers, but on dialogue, fairness, and respect for divergent opinions,” the Speaker noted.
“The Majority must not wield its numbers as a weapon, but as a responsibility to build consensus and strengthen parliamentary democracy.”
Rt. Hon. Bagbin’s comments come amid rising tensions between the two sides of the House following recent developments, including a Minority walkout during the swearing-in of the new MP for Ablekuma North.
In addition to his call for parliamentary restraint, Speaker Bagbin also appealed for calm and order ahead of the upcoming by-election in the Akwatia Constituency.
He urged political parties, candidates, and supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and in accordance with electoral laws.
“The people of Akwatia deserve a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process. Let us not allow political interests to override the national interest,” he stated.
