A group identifying itself as the Platform for Elite Teachers has declared its support for Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to lead the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2028 general elections as its presidential candidate.

At a press conference held in Asawase, the President of the group, Mr. Samuel Owusu Kankam, described the Vice President as a transformative and visionary leader with a proven track record in academia and public service.

He pointed to her historic achievements—from becoming the first female Vice Chancellor of a public university in Ghana to serving as the country’s first female Vice President—as evidence of her competence and dedication to national development.

According to Mr. Kankam, the 2028 elections demand leadership anchored in knowledge, integrity and a clear national purpose. He characterised Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s leadership style as consultative, calm and evidence-based, adding that she focuses on strengthening institutions and building long-term national capacity rather than pursuing short-term political gains.

Drawing historical and symbolic comparisons, he likened her steadfast principles to the courage of Yaa Asantewaa and described her nurturing leadership qualities as reflective of the Virgin Mary.

Mr. Kankam further argued that her leadership signals a shift in Ghana’s political direction—from an emphasis solely on macroeconomic management to a broader focus on human capital development, gender equity and inclusive growth.

He called on members of the NDC and the general public to rally behind her prospective bid, maintaining that she is best positioned to safeguard Ghana’s democratic stability and economic progress.
