Tema Traditional Council kick against nomination of Ebi Bright as MCE

The Tema Traditional Council in the Greater Accra Region has voiced strong opposition to the nomination of Madam Ebi Bright as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tema, raising concerns over the continued absence of local representation in the leadership of the area’s assemblies.
The Council noted that none of the three assemblies under its jurisdiction—Tema Metropolitan, Ashaiman, and Tema West—currently has an indigene serving as MCE.
Speaking on behalf of the Council, Nii Armah Somponu, the Stool Secretary, questioned why the Tema area is consistently overlooked, while neighbouring districts have natives occupying key leadership positions.
“The people of Tema deserve fair representation in governance.
It is worrying that all three assemblies lack a single indigene in the top leadership role,” Nii Somponu said.
He further criticised the government for failing to consult the Traditional Council before nominating Ebi Bright, a move he said violates the consultative spirit enshrined in the Constitution.
“It is disheartening that almost all major government institutions in Tema are headed by non-indigenes.
This continuous marginalisation is unfair and must be addressed,” he stressed.
The Council is calling on the government to reconsider the nomination and prioritise local representation in future appointments.
