The Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) has marked one year in office of the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, highlighting significant achievements recorded between February 2025 and January 2026 across key sectors of the regional economy and social development.

In a press release titled “One Year in Office: Smart Results for Volta,” the VRCC said the minister’s first year has been guided by practical, people-centred leadership aimed at improving livelihoods, strengthening peace and accelerating inclusive development in line with national priorities.

In the area of water, sanitation and energy, the region rolled out the Water for All Initiative, which led to the drilling and support of mechanised boreholes in schools and health facilities across the region. Ground-breaking works were undertaken for boreholes at Taviefe Senior High School, alongside collaborations with Italian hydro-power and water experts to advance sustainable water and clean energy solutions.

Health delivery also recorded major improvements with the commissioning of a new health facility at Abutia Kpota and the establishment of a Biomedical Engineering Unit at the Regional Health Directorate to enhance the maintenance of medical equipment. Facilities such as the Ho Teaching Hospital, Hohoe Municipal Hospital and the Akatsi North District Health Directorate benefited from medical supplies, specialist support and expanded outreach services.

Education and human capital development received strong attention during the period. The region supported the National Education Forum, resolved challenges that led to school closures at Ketu South Senior High School, and distributed computers, textbooks and other learning materials to schools. Renovation works were completed in several districts, while targeted educational support reached vulnerable students across the Region.

On peace, security and governance, the minister prioritised institutional strengthening and collaboration with traditional authorities. Capacity-building initiatives for the Volta Region House of Chiefs, support for police recruitment and training, and dialogue-based conflict resolution mechanisms contributed to improved security and social stability.

Agriculture and the local economy were boosted through the distribution of farm inputs, the securing of thousands of hectares of land for irrigation, and farmer support programmes focused on training and market access. The region also hosted the Volta Trade and Investment Fair and actively promoted the 24-Hour Economy agenda within the agricultural sector.

Investment promotion and infrastructure development were strengthened with the establishment of a Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Regional Office in Ho. Strategic partnerships with Chinese institutions were signed to support agro-processing, while key housing and coastal defence projects were launched to address housing deficits and protect vulnerable coastal communities.

Social, cultural and humanitarian interventions also featured prominently. The region responded promptly to disaster emergencies, supported community festivals, upgraded the Volta Sports Stadium to enhance sports development, and donated proceeds from national events to support abused and vulnerable children.

The VRCC noted that the achievements recorded align strongly with President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Agenda, particularly in the areas of peace and security, effective local governance and strategic partnerships. The Council expressed confidence that the foundations laid over the past year will position the Volta Region as a resilient, productive and prosperous hub of national development.
