The embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), following his arrest at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

His lawyer, Mr. Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed the development during an interview on Accra-based Neat FM on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

According to him, although bail was granted late Tuesday night, the legal team was unable to fulfil the bail conditions in time, leaving his client in custody overnight.

Mr. Appiah-Kubi revealed that Chairman Wontumi took ill during EOCO's interrogation and is currently receiving medical attention at a hospital, under EOCO’s supervision.

He dismissed reports suggesting that his client was mishandled by EOCO officers, praising the agency for the professionalism it exhibited throughout the process.

In particular, he commended the Executive Director of EOCO, Mr. Raymond Archer, for what he described as an exemplary display of fairness and professionalism.

“The officers at EOCO were exceptionally professional,” the lawyer emphasised.

Mr. Appiah-Kubi, who is also a former Member of Parliament for the Asante Akyem North Constituency, added that his team will begin the process of meeting the bail conditions this morning to secure Chairman Wontumi's full release.
