Supporters of the New Patriotic Party Parliamentary Contestant, Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama have said they will not accept any decision that falls short of a re-run of the botched Saturday, January 27 parliamentary primary election in the Yendi constituency.
The parliamentary primaries in Yendi were inconclusive. The counting process was disrupted, and the mandated body to conduct and declare the election, the Electoral Commission, did not declare the results.
This was affirmed by a statement from the EC and subsequently, the General Secretary requested from the Inspector General of Police and the EC Chairperson reports of the election.
The issue has since been referred to a three-member committee to communicate the decision of National Executive Committee (NEC) to the interested parties in the dispute.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, 20th February 2024, in Yendi, supporters of Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama cautioned the NEC and the three-member committee that they will not accept any decision that falls short of a re-run of the polls.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, it is no news that the elections were inconclusive and so we expect NEC to do the needful by organising a re-run of the elections, for a clear winner to be determined,” they said.
“As supporters of Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama, we shall campaign and vote massively for any of the two aspirants who emerges after the re-run,” they added.
The supporters described as “a clear violation of the rule of natural justice” if NEC chooses its choice of a Parliamentary candidate especially when there is a dispute among the parties.
The supporters reiterated their call on NEC to as a matter of urgency to organise a re-run of the Yendi parliamentary primary election within seven days as anything short of a re-run will have dire consequences for the parliamentary fortunes of the party in the constituency.
