2020: New voter roll a must; current one over bloated – JOY
Ghana needs a new register of voters for the December 2020 general elections, a former independent presidential candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah (JOY) has said.
Speaking on the maiden edition of CTV’s breakfast show ‘Dwabirem’ on Monday, 10 February 2020 hosted by Kwame Appiah Kubi, JOY said he believes the current register is over bloated, hence unfit for the elections this year.
In his view, the current register must be cleaned up through the compilation of a new one, otherwise it can create electoral chaos.
The Electoral Commission (EC) is currently putting in place measures to start the compilation of the new roll.
However, the decision to compile a new register has been met with stiff opposition from political parties including the biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and some CSOs.
The opposers believe the timing for the compilation of a new register is wrong.
But JOY said: “I took the EC to court in 2016 on the basis that the register was over bloated. If you go into an election with an over bloated register, somebody can rig the elections.”
He stressed: “The EC must be allowed to compile a new register. As peace- loving people, we need to accept a new register because the current one can create chaos.”
