Digitisation key to closing inequality gap – Accra Digital Centre MD

The Managing Director of the Accra Digital Centre, Mr Eric Kofi Nkansah, has said tackling digitisation from the grassroots is the best approach to closing the inequality gap in the country.

According to Mr Nkansah, acquiring basic things like a driver’s licence, a birth certificate and a passport, among others can all be done online, making it imperative for the grassroots to be educated on digitisation.

Speaking on CTV's Ghana Kasa on Monday, 15 July 2019, Mr Nkansah told show host Israel Venunye that the facility has improved under the current Communication Ministry headed by Mrs Usula Owusu-Ekuful.

He commended the minister for putting strategic measures in place to boost the ICT centre. According to him, even though they started working in June 2017, they have been able to bring about 40 technology companies on board and created about 2,000 jobs for young people in Ghana.

Mr Nkansah noted that the centre can boast of a mobile application lab and innovation hub for training the youth in ICT.

He added that a provision has been made by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) to focus on under-served communities to enable those who do not have access to digital technology to gain access.

The Accra Digital Centre MD encouraged the youth to enrol in any of the programmes run at the centre to help acquaint themselves with the necessary skills. The centre, he said, is focused on training a lot of Ghanaian youth to be able to serve the African continent.

The Accra Digital Centre Project is one of the government's initiatives to create an opportunity for sustainable entrepreneurial employment for young Ghanaians. It is estimated to provide 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.
