President Mahama orders nationwide integration of new security and E-gate systems at airports and borders

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate integration of advanced security systems at Terminal 2, Kumasi International Airport, and Tamale International Airport, as part of a broader push to enhance travel efficiency and national security.
Speaking at the opening of the Air Navigation Services and Passenger Information Unit, President Mahama underscored the importance of modern digital infrastructure in safeguarding Ghana’s borders and supporting seamless passenger movement.
He announced plans for the deployment of E-gate systems at key travel points, emphasising their role in streamlining border checks, improving threat detection, and positioning Ghana as a secure and business-friendly hub in West Africa.
To ensure comprehensive coverage, the President has tasked the Ministers for the Interior, Transport, and Foreign Affairs to oversee the extension of these systems to all land and sea borders.
The upgrade will include an Advanced Cargo Information System to bolster Customs operations and facilitate efficient cargo screening.
“This digital transformation is a critical step in building a smarter, safer, and more connected Ghana,” President Mahama stated.
“Our border management must evolve to meet global standards.”
Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, in his remarks, outlined the capabilities of the newly opened unit, highlighting systems for air-to-ground and ground-to-ground communication, search-and-rescue coordination, weather monitoring, aeronautical data processing, and air traffic management.
He lauded the steady growth of Ghana’s aviation sector, attributing it to consistent government investment.
However, he called on stakeholders to match this investment with “dedication, discipline, and accountability” to fully realise the potential of the new systems.
The Minister further challenged the Acting Director-General and staff of the aviation sector to ensure the facility delivers on its mandate of modernising air navigation and passenger information services across the country.
The new initiative forms part of the government’s broader digitalisation agenda and is expected to significantly boost operational efficiency in Ghana’s aviation and border control systems.
