President of Ghana Badminton Association, Evans Addo has welcomed President Nana Akufo-Addo’s directive to resume non-contact sports and says they are ready to return to normal training on June 6, 2020.

Nana Akufo-Addo, in his 10th COVIID 19 address to the nation on May 31, 2020, announced that non-contact sports can restart after the shutdown all sporting activities in March due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

“We have put together guidelines for our members so that they will be able to follow them. Key amongst them is hopefully from June 6, that is, this Saturday, we are returning to normal. So, what is means is that number one; they should follow government guidelines. There are also venue-specific rules. For example, follow the necessary hygiene protocols. Only use your equipment single-handedly. Focus on the shuttlecock and after each particular march, do not carry it onto the next match,” Mr Yeboah said.

In an interview with Class Sports, Mr Yeboah observed that constant deliberations with their mother body may have informed the President’s decision to ease restrictions for individual sports such as Badminton.

“We are an individual sport and we have been having a lot of engagements with the ministry for the last 11 weeks, which is basically our regulatory mother body and we have been able to share our thoughts and we believe that, that is what informed the decisions for the president’s address to be able to ease restrictions for individual sports which Badminton is part,” he added.

Ghana’s Badminton team was preparing for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games but had to suspend their activities due to the shutdown of all sporting activities in the country.
