CAF inspects Cape Coast and Accra stadia for AfCON qualifiers
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has completed inspections of the Accra and Cape Coast stadiums, evaluating them for potential approval to host category C matches.
This follows the suspension of the Baba Yara Stadium’s license due to its inadequate playing surface.
As a result, Ghana currently lacks a certified stadium for international fixtures, prompting the consideration of alternative venues abroad for the upcoming doubleheader against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
CAF inspectors visited Ghana over the weekend to assess the two stadiums, following a request from the Ministry of Sports aimed at ensuring that the matches can be held locally without embarrassment.
Previously, the Ministry had instructed the Ghana Football Association to seek a reinspection of the Accra, Legon, and Cape Coast stadiums after initial communications from CAF highlighted concerns.
If either the Accra or Cape Coast stadium meets the necessary standards, Ghana could receive temporary approval to host the AFCON qualifiers in October.
During a recent appearance before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif and Seth Panwum, the Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA), assured that the game against Sudan would take place in Ghana.
The Black Stars are scheduled to host Sudan in the first leg on Friday, October 11, before traveling to Libya to face Sudan again at the Martyrs of February Stadium on Monday, October 14.
Currently, the Black Stars sit in third place in Group F with just one point from two matches.
