Egypt rally to beat Black Meteors in AFCON U23 group tie
The Black Meteors lost 3-2 to Egypt on Monday in their 2019 U23 AFCON Group A encounter after allowing the young pharaohs to fight back twice and secure a win.
Ghana started the game on a positive note after captain Yaw Yeboah shot the Black Meteors into the lead in the 6th minute.
The tournament hosts however fought back and were rewarded with a goal in the 17th minute after Mostafa Mohamed’s header hit the back of the net.
After recess, Coach Ibrahim Tanko’s side took control of the game once again and shot themselves into the lead again courtesy Samuel Obeng’s goal two minutes into the second half.
Again the Black Meteors allowed Egypt to restore parity as Goalkeeper Kwame Baah failed to stop Ramadan Sobhi’s shot in the 82nd minute.
After minutes of pressure on Ghana, Egypt got the winner with just few minutes to the end of the match as Yasser Rayan drove home to give the home side the lead.
Egypt has now advanced to the semi final stage of the competition with six points, Cameroon sits second with four points while Ghana has one point with Mali bottom with zero.
Ghana will hope to defeat Mali in the final game of the group to have a shot at qualifying for the next stage of the competition.
A win for Ghana in the final group match will take the Black Meteors into the next round if Egypt beats Cameroon in the other match on Thursday.
