Ghanaian athletes can resume training

The General Secretary of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), Bawa Fuseini, has expressed delight at the decision by the government to resume non-contact sports.

President Akufo-Addo, in his 10th COVID-19 address to the nation on 31 May 2020, announced that non-contact sports can restart.

In an interview with YFM Kumasi, Mr Fuseini stated that they welcome the opportunity to train, while waiting for the ban on sports to be totally lifted.

“It was good news and was under the impression that, at least, we can have the opportunity to continue training and wait for modalities from the sports ministry and the NSA. At least, we can start doing something before the overall lifting of the ban,” he said.

The General Secretary also added that the President’s announcement to resume training will give their athletes ample time to gear up for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games qualifiers later this year.

“The Olympic qualifications starts this year - 10th December. If we will have the opportunity to start training now, it will not be too late to have a very good team before December so that we can have our next national championships,” he observed.

Mr Fuseini also revealed how the resumption of non-contact training will have an impact on their finances.

“In terms of cost, it will increase our cost, but in terms of progress, it’s very good progress to start now," he added.
