Ghana discusses 2026 World Cup travels with Canada
The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr James Gyakye Quayson, has held a bilateral meeting with Canada’s Deputy Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Dr. Harpreet S. Kochhar, to discuss issues relating to immigration, migration management and broader bilateral cooperation.
The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, focused on promoting safe, orderly and regular migration, while strengthening collaboration between Ghana and Canada.
Mr Quayson commended the long-standing cordial relations between the two countries and called for deeper cooperation to enhance mutual benefits.
He stressed the importance of expanding legal migration pathways as a means of curbing the dangers associated with irregular migration.
Highlighting the skills and potential of Ghana’s youthful population, the Deputy Minister proposed that both countries explore a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Labour Mobility to address irregular migration challenges while meeting labour needs.
He also assured the Canadian delegation of Ghana’s readiness to work closely with Canada to ensure smooth immigration processes for Ghanaian nationals travelling to Canada for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In his remarks, Dr. Kochhar outlined Canada’s concerns regarding irregular migration but reaffirmed his country’s commitment to a coordinated and efficient immigration process for the FIFA World Cup 2026, in close collaboration with the Government of Ghana.
