The 13th African Games did not serve as a qualifier for boxing to the 2024 Olympic Games. As a result, Ghanaian boxers must travel to Thailand to compete for qualification to Paris 2024.
The event will take place from May 23 to June 3, 2024, in Bangkok.
The IBA rules and regulations for Olympic qualification have changed. After the first World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Italy, Thailand represents the second and final opportunity for boxers to secure their places at the 2024 Olympic Games.
This event will feature tough competition, with three qualification options available for all national federations. The qualification process will conclude in early June 2024, approximately two months before the Olympics begin.
The European Games in Poland was the first qualifier, where 17 countries secured at least one spot for Paris. France, Turkey, and Ireland were the most successful, obtaining seven, six, and five tickets respectively. The African Olympic Boxing Qualifier, held in Dakar, Senegal, from September 9-15, replaced the African Games as the qualifier.
The Asian Games, postponed from 2022 to 2023, took place in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 7, offering 34 quotas.
The Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile and the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands concluded the continental qualifiers in October and November, respectively.
The first World Olympic Boxing Qualifier was held in Busto Arsizio, Italy, near Milan, from February 29 to March 12. In this event, 49 quotas (21 for women and 28 for men) were awarded.
The second and final World Olympic Boxing Qualifier will be held in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3, with the remaining 51 quotas (for six women’s and seven men’s weight categories) to be distributed.
Ghana’s technical team for this crucial qualifier includes Dr. Ofori Asare (Head Coach), Vincent Akai Nettey (1st Assistant Coach), Elvis Robertson (2nd Assistant Coach), Edward Asante (Team Doctor), and Daniel Quartey.
