The Ghana Federation of American Football (GFAF), in partnership with the Ghana Education Service (GES), has launched its first-ever 10-day coaching clinic at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium.

Running from May 12 to May 23, 2025, the event marks a significant milestone in the introduction of American Flag Football to Ghana’s education and sports systems.

The clinic has drawn participation from 16 regional Physical Education Coordinators nationwide.

It also features high-level representation from GFAF, including its Vice President, Mohammed Osman Nkosi, as well as a delegation of seasoned coaches and instructors from the United States—Prise Navarro Leone, Grimes David Michael, Thomas Ratcliff, and Chadwick Demond Louisville.

The objective of the clinic is to train participants in the fundamentals of American Flag Football—a fast-paced, non-contact sport that emphasises agility, strategy, and teamwork.

Speaking at the opening session, GFAF Vice President Mohammed Osman Nkosi highlighted the clinic’s focus on grassroots capacity building:

"We believe that by empowering

Our physical education coordinator, with knowledge and skills in American flag football, we are laying a strong foundation for sports development in Ghana.

Madam Cynthia Wise, Deputy National PE Director, commended the initiative and described it as timely and impactful.

"This programme gives us the tools to go back to our various regions and introduce something fresh and exciting to our students.

Flag football is a safe, skill-based sport that promotes inclusivity, and I believe it will be well received in schools.”

In an interview, U.S. coach David Grimes expressed his gratitude to the Ghana Education Service for embracing the initiative.

"I’m happy we’re doing this with the Ghana Education Service because sports and education go hand in hand. When we reach the grassroots, the interest in the sport will grow.

There’s a lot of potential here, and every sport needs a solid base to thrive”.

Day one concluded successfully, with participants receiving training on game rules, field setup, the history and future of the sport, and the transformative potential of flag football to impact students’ lives across the country.

This coaching clinic marks a historic milestone in Ghana’s sports development and signifies a bold step toward integrating American football into the national education and athletic systems.
