Joana Owoo: The 8-year-old Bukom boxing ‘prodigy’ sparring her way to the top

On Saturday, 17 August 2024, eight-year-old amateur boxer Joana Owoo faced a male opponent in a three-round match at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
The Class-Two pupil of Peytons Academy, located near the Jamestown Police Station in what used to be British Accra, stole the show during the fight.
Her impressive combinations, footwork, counterpunches, defences, crosses, and cuts dazzled the judges and audience, earning her a well-deserved recognition in the match promoted by Max TV.
This was Joana’s sixth fight since she began boxing at the tender age of four.
She has also competed in other bouts at Jamestown Mantse Agbonaa, Ada, Osu Stadium, Bukom Park, and Oceanic Beach.
Joana's passion for boxing blossomed as she regularly accompanied her older sister, Margaret Owoo, to the arena to watch her train, their mother, Belinda Larweh, shared in an interview with ClassFMonline.com.
Interestingly, Margaret, now 14 and a Form-2 junior high student at the same school as Joana, also began her sparring journey when she was just four years old.
Their mother, who is very proud of her daughters, hopes that their passion for boxing will one day earn them a place in the Ghana Armed Forces.
