Commey facing count from the referee

Ghana’s Richard Commey lost his International Boxing Federation (IBF) title to American Honduran Teofimo Lopez.

He was stopped in the second round of their 12-round fight in Madison Square Garden in the United States of America early Sunday morning.

The 22-year-old Lopez (15-0, 12 KO) absolutely drilled Commey (29-3, 26 KO) with a right hand.

Commey went down but the 32-year-old Ghanaian veteran tried to solider on.

Lopez, smelling his chance, went for the finish, and as he battered Commey against the ropes, he gave referee David Fields no choice but to stop the bout at 1:13 of the second round.

Teofimo Lopez, who was the favourite for the night won the IBF lightweight title at Madison Square Garden.

“I’m lost for words, but like the great KG said, ‘Anything is possible!’” Lopez said after the fight.

“That’s a bad guy, that’s a bad man right there. Any shot [from him] could’ve done the same thing. It was gonna be an explosive night", he noted.

A unification with top lightweight star Vasiliy Lomachenko was the icing on the cake for Lopez, as the former, who was in attendance stepped into the ring to take a photo with the latter after the mics were put away, with promoter Bob Arum standing between them.

Richard Commey has now lost three out of 32 fights.
