The Public Relations Officer at the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr Charles Amofah, has revealed that his outfit is doing the necessary consultations to add more non-contact disciplines to a list of 14 others whose teams have been allowed to resume training in Ghana.

This follows the declaration by President Nana Akufo-Addo that non-contact sports can go ahead during his 10th COVID-19 televised address on Sunday, 31 May 2020.

The NSA, in a statement, said athletics, badminton, tennis, golf, table tennis, power lifting, weightlifting, cycling, draughts, horse racing, squash, para sports, rowing and canoeing as well as baseball and softball can resume their respective drills.

However, non-contact sports like shooting, swimming, gymnastics and chess did not make the list, prompting a response from the NSA.

“We are still doing further consultation. We had a call from the Swimming Federation saying they are also an individual sport. But, we are not too sure about the nature of this COVID disease, whether it thrives in water or not. So, we need a little time to be able to add other disciplines to what we have put out there”, he said.

Mr Amofa further added that the various national stadia are officially open to the selected athletes of the non-contact sports listed.

“Definitely, we are opening our facilities for all these disciplines to have their trainings. Baba Yara [Stadium] is under renovation. Essipong [Stadium] is also under renovation. For now, Accra Sport Stadium will be opened up. Tamale Sports Stadium is also there. We have Cape Coast [Stadium] and other smaller facilities where athletics and other disciplines have their training sessions. So, for now, we are going to open it up for these 14 disciplines to have their training.
