Football Analyst and TV Presenter, Coach Nana Kwaku Agyemang has taken on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for sidelining its qualification guidelines by appointing Coach Otto Addo to lead the Black Stars.

According to him, Otto Addo’s appointment is a clear case of incompetence on the part of the people in charge of Ghana football, referring to the move in his own words as “another case of lunatics taking over the asylum”.

Last Friday, the Ghana Football Association confirmed that Coach Otto Addo will have a second chance to lead the rebuild of the Senior Men’s National Team, following approval of Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association in an emergency meeting on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

The GFA added that it had consequently reached an agreement with Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund for Coach Otto Addo to be released to take up the job. Coach Otto Addo is expected to be offered a 34-month contract with an option for a further 24 months. Otto will be allowed by Borussia Dortmund to join Ghana for the March international window, after which he will travel back to the club to officially hand over and take up the job permanently in May this year.

Otto Addo’s appointment has, however, been greeted with split public opinion amidst concerns that he failed to meet the needed requirements set out by the GFA’s own Black Stars Head Coach Search Committee.

Below are the qualification criteria:

1.            The Head Coach should be a proven winner in coaching Top Men’s National Teams or Club Football.

2.            Must hold the highest football license in the world with 15 years of football experience.

3.            Proven track record in team reconstruction, organization and development of young talent.

4.            Proven disciplinarian, and tactician with strong leadership skills.

In an interview with Class News, Coach Nana Kwaku Agyemang said the appointment of the former Ghanaian international despite failing to meet the needed criteria is an anomaly.

He was, however, quick to add that Coach Otto Addo should be given a chance to manage the Black stars while cautioning that “no one should be telling him (Coach Otto Addo) what player to select”.

He added that the coach and his technical team must outline a comprehensive selection criterion to ensure transparency among Ghanaians.
