Player arrogance can invite racist abuse – Stephen Appiah

Former Black Stars Captain, Stephen Appiah, has condemned racism in modern football but believes the conduct of players on the field could contribute to the spate of racist chants.

The former Juventus midfielder recounts that he never experienced player abuse during his active days and called for more effective measures from stakeholders to deal with the problem.

The latest case is the reported abuse of Inter Milan's Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku during a match against Cagliari in the Italian Seria A.

Appiah told Class 91.3FM's Magdalene Krampah in an interview that: "Most of the time, the fans don't do that deliberately but do that when they see that the player is arrogant or the player behaves in a certain way. Through jealousy or envy, they just come and attack you”.

The Technical Coordinator of the Black Stars added that he does not “think that it's going to end because it has been there for years". However, he was optimistic and hopeful “that one day, it will go."

Appiah, who played for Udinese, Parma, Brescia, Bologna and Cesena in Italy, explained that another reason for player racism is “when they know that you're a good player. They'll just attack you to distract you from the pitch."

For him, adult Caucasians must also stop brainwashing their children into thinking that blacks are inferior and deserve to be treated as second-class individuals.

"I think that's what they teach their children at home because I don't know why a 10- or 12-year-old boy (or girl) will come to the stadium or will see a black person on the street and behave in a certain way," Appiah lamented, adding: “That means it's not [the children's doing]; it's their parents who put that thing in their minds".

He wondered how football organisations have been working to stamp out the unfortunate behaviour yet the practice is rife in modern football.

"We've been talking about racism. Fifa, Caf have all involved themselves heavily but still, it's not going away,” he bemoaned.

Appiah was capped for the Ghana national team for 67 times scoring 14 goals.
