NAiMOS presents seized firearms to Interior Ministry for processing and destruction
The first batch of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAiMOS) has presented a number of firearms seized during anti-illegal mining operations to the Ministry of the Interior for further processing.
The items were formally handed over as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen enforcement against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.
Officials overseeing the exercise commended the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and the NAiMOS team for their commitment and dedication to combating illegal mining in the country.
Following the presentation, the seized firearms were handed over to the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons for proper documentation, marking, and destruction in accordance with established legal procedures.
Authorities have assured the public that all items seized during anti-galamsey operations, particularly excavators and other heavy equipment, will be handled transparently and in line with due legal processes.
They indicated that details of seizures and subsequent actions will be made public through appropriate channels to ensure accountability and public trust in the operations.
Stakeholders have called on communities affected by illegal mining to continue supporting government efforts to curb the practice, warning that galamsey continues to pose a serious threat to water bodies, farmlands, the environment, and public health.
Newly deployed NAiMOS personnel have also been urged to carry out their duties with professionalism, integrity, and dedication in order to sustain public confidence and enhance the effectiveness of the national campaign against illegal mining.
The Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubrak Muntaka reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and ensuring that future generations benefit from sustainable environmental management.
