The Ghana Police Service has arrested Eric Afoakwa, also known as “Chad”, who was previously convicted in absentia by the Accra High Court and sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for multiple financial offences.

Afoakwa was convicted in 2019 on five out of six counts, including money laundering, defrauding by false pretences, forgery of official documents and tax evasion. The case was presided over by Justice Georgina Mensah-Datsa, who also ordered him to refund $132,660 to the complainant.

Following the judgment, he reportedly went into hiding and was declared wanted by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), which had appealed for public assistance to trace him.

On 6 July 2026, a team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, acting on directives from the Inspector-General of Police, arrested him while he was allegedly preparing to leave the country.

He is expected to be handed over to EOCO for the enforcement of the court’s judgment.

The Ghana Police Service says it will continue to work with relevant state agencies to arrest fugitives and ensure they are brought before the law.
