Seven convicted for open defecation and illegal refuse dumping in Accra

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Sanitation Court has convicted seven individuals for engaging in open defecation and dumping refuse at unauthorised sites within the capital city.
The convicts — Albert Quaye, Kwame Owusu Ansah, Daniel Nunoo, Razak Siedu, Haruna Abdul Rauf, Desmond Okeyika, and Moro Sebere — were found guilty by Her Lordship Rosemond Vera Aryeetey, who presided over the case. Each was fined 50 penalty units, equivalent to GH₵600, or will serve three months in prison if they fail to pay the fine.
According to the prosecutor, Nii Okine Aryee, the offenders were arrested by Public Health Officers of the AMA during a special sanitation enforcement exercise conducted on October 7, 2025.
The operation, led by Madam Florence Kuukyi, focused on individuals and households violating Accra’s environmental by-laws on waste management and public hygiene.
The AMA has stepped up enforcement of its sanitation regulations in recent months, targeting open defecation, indiscriminate refuse dumping, and other unsanitary practices.
Officials emphasise that these measures are designed to protect public health and curb the spread of diseases such as cholera.
In a statement, the Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining a clean and healthy environment, warning that anyone caught flouting the city’s sanitation laws will be prosecuted.
“Keeping Accra clean is a shared responsibility,” the statement added.
