A suspected armed robber, known locally as "Mugu," has died following a taxi hijacking near the La Girls’ School area in La, Accra, on Saturday, June 13.

The incident has left the taxi driver traumatised and prompted a police investigation.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect confronted the driver of a Daewoo Matiz taxi (registration GS 8598-17), fired a gunshot, and seized the vehicle.

Although the gunfire drew the attention of nearby residents and motorists, many avoided intervening out of fear because the suspect was armed. The suspect then sped off in the stolen car.

The escape was short-lived, as the taxi crashed a short distance away under circumstances that remain unclear. Following the crash, the suspect was found with a fatal gunshot wound, though it is currently uncertain whether the injury was sustained before, during, or after the accident. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

Responding police officers transported the suspect's body to the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The exact condition of the taxi driver was not immediately known, though residents confirmed he was attended to after the assault.

The police have not yet issued an official statement or detailed how the suspect received the fatal gunshot wound.

The incident has sparked safety concerns among local residents regarding armed robberies in densely populated neighborhoods.
