The Tertiary Education Workers’ Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has issued a strong protest against the Chief Labour Officer, accusing the office of intentionally delaying the verification process mandated to determine which union represents the majority of workers in Ghana’s traditional public universities.

According to TEWU-GH, the National Labour Commission (NLC) had directed the Chief Labour Officer to conduct the verification exercise to resolve ongoing disputes over union representation within the universities. However, the Union says the process has stalled without justification.

In a statement signed by the National Chairman of TEWU-GH, Mr Charles Arthur announced that it has formally notified the National Labour Commission of its intention to embark on a strike if the verification exercise is not completed and a report submitted to the Commission by the end of December 2025.

The Union cited Section 159 (a & b) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which outlines the conditions under which workers may resort to lawful strike action.
