Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday night as the Super Eagles lost 4–2 on penalties to Morocco after a tense 0–0 draw in their semi-final playoff clash in Rabat.

The highly anticipated encounter at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah was a cagey affair, with both sides prioritising defensive organisation over attacking risk. Nigeria struggled to create chances in the first half and finished the match with just two shots, while Morocco dominated attacking phases but were unable to break down a disciplined Nigerian backline.

Calvin Bassey was booked in the 33rd minute as Nigeria absorbed sustained Moroccan pressure, while the second half followed a similar pattern. Raphael Onyedika was cautioned for holding in the 77th minute before Moses Simon was withdrawn moments later as head coach Eric Chelle sought fresh energy.

Extra time failed to separate the sides despite several substitutions from both teams, including the late introduction of Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu for Nigeria. Morocco continued to threaten but were repeatedly denied by resolute defending and alert goalkeeping.

The match was ultimately decided by penalties. Morocco converted four of their spot-kicks, with Achraf Hakimi and Youssef En Nesyri keeping their composure under pressure. Nigeria, however, faltered at crucial moments as Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi both missed their attempts, leaving the Super Eagles chasing the shootout.

Morocco’s superior attacking intent was reflected in the statistics, finishing with 16 shots and an expected goals tally of 0.80 compared to Nigeria’s 0.05. The victory sends the Atlas Lions into the AFCON final on home soil, while Nigeria are left to reflect on a resilient but ultimately disappointing semi-final exit.
