2017-2022: Judgment debts swallow ¢300m

More than GH¢300 million has been paid by the Akufo-Addo government as judgment debt between 2017 and 2022, the Ministry of Finance has revealed in response to a Right to Information (RTI) request.
The ministry disclosed in a letter dated August 2023 that GH¢300,385,317.52 was disbursed during this period as judgment debt to various individuals, companies and entities.

The RTI request was made by JoyNews.
Just on Tuesday, 27 February 2024, President Nana Akufo-Addo said the office of the Attorney General saved Ghana GH¢10 trillion in judgment debts.
In his last State of the Nation Address to Parliament, Mr Akufo-Addo said: "The Attorney General has continued, in a very effective manner, the tradition under this administration of contesting every civil litigation against the state, and has avoided the numerous judgment debts that used to be given against the state".
"The Office, as a result, has saved the country over ten trillion Ghana cedis (GH¢10 trillion)", he announced.
