E/R: Confusion rocks Suhum over lorry fare reduction as drivers defy directive

Tensions are simmering at the Suhum lorry station as drivers plying the Suhum–Koforidua route openly defy calls to reduce transport fares, following recent adjustments in fuel prices.
Despite expectations from passengers and transport authorities for a corresponding fare reduction, some drivers insist the current fare structure must remain unchanged, sparking confusion and dissatisfaction among commuters.
In interviews with Accra FM/CTV news reporter Apelete Kofi-Michel, several drivers expressed frustration over what they described as unrealistic public expectations.
According to them, while fuel prices may have seen a slight drop, the cost of vehicle maintenance, spare parts, and general operations remains high.
“We are not just paying for fuel.
The cost of tires, servicing, and even the daily ‘tickets’ we pay have not gone down,” one driver argued. “If we reduce the fare now, we’ll be running at a loss.”
The situation has created a standoff between drivers and passengers, with some commuters accusing the drivers of exploiting the situation for profit.
Transport unions in the area are yet to issue a formal statement, but sources say discussions are ongoing to bring all stakeholders to the table and avoid potential clashes.
As fuel prices fluctuate, the public continues to demand fair fare adjustments in line with national economic conditions. Until then, the stand-off in Suhum remains unresolved.
