Ghana Gold Board rakes in over $10bn ahead of target
The Ghana Gold Board has surpassed its 2025 small-scale gold export target, recording exports in excess of 100 tonnes and generating more than $10 billion in foreign exchange earnings for the country.
The milestone, achieved yesterday, marks an unprecedented performance in Ghana’s small-scale gold export sector and underscores the growing contribution of regulated artisanal and small-scale mining to the national economy.
According to the Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, the 100-tonne target was set as part of broader efforts to formalise small-scale mining, improve traceability in gold exports and maximise foreign exchange inflows through official channels. Exceeding the benchmark ahead of schedule signals strong compliance by licensed operators and improved efficiency in gold aggregation and export processes.
Industry analysts say the over $10 billion inflow is expected to significantly bolster Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves, support currency stability and strengthen the country’s balance of payments position, particularly amid ongoing economic recovery efforts.
The achievement also highlights the impact of recent reforms aimed at curbing smuggling, tightening oversight and ensuring that gold produced by small-scale miners is exported transparently and in line with national regulations.
The Ghana Gold Board has been central to coordinating purchases from licensed small-scale miners, enforcing pricing transparency and facilitating exports, while working closely with other state agencies to sanitise the sector.
The CEO, in a statement on his Facebook wall, said the record performance reinforces the strategic importance of small-scale gold mining in Ghana’s mineral economy and provides further justification for continued investment in regulation, monitoring and value optimisation within the sector.
The Board is expected to release further details in the coming days on how the additional foreign exchange inflows will be leveraged to support broader economic and development objectives.
