The government has introduced a new digital platform designed to simplify Ghana’s national net-metering system and accelerate the adoption of solar power across the country.

Net-metering allows households, businesses and institutions generating electricity through solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to feed surplus power into the national grid and receive credits to reduce their electricity bills.

Launching the portal in Accra on Thursday, Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, said the platform would remove long-standing administrative barriers that previously slowed solar uptake and strengthen the nation’s shift toward clean energy.

“This intuitive system gives households, businesses and industrial users the ability to apply for smart meters for both captive and renewable installations,” he said.

“It also provides an integrated mechanism for tracking all solar PV systems nationwide.”

Mr Gyan-Mensah noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader agenda to diversify Ghana’s energy mix.

The project is being supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Climate Investment Funds, the government of Switzerland and the government of Ghana.

Swiss Ambassador Simone Giger highlighted the portal’s role in improving documentation, strengthening monitoring and enhancing data accuracy across the renewable-energy sector.

She said these improvements would help promote transparency and sector-wide efficiency.

Acting Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Eunice Biritwum, said the system would reduce bureaucratic delays and enhance coordination between the Commission and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

AfDB Country Manager Eyerusalem Fasika reaffirmed the Bank’s US$27 million support for Ghana’s renewable-energy efforts, including ongoing investments in mini-grid PV projects and the national net-metering programme.

Government officials expect the new digital portal to streamline solar adoption and make clean, affordable and sustainable energy more accessible to consumers nationwide.
