Parliamentary Committee engages Oceana Global on fisheries governance and blue economy
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs has held high-level discussions with an international delegation from Oceana regarding plans to establish operations in Ghana.
The meeting, led by Committee Chairman Godfred Seidu Jasaw, brought together key representatives of the global ocean conservation organisation, including Chief Executive Officer James Simon, Chief Scientist and Senior Vice President Kathryn Matthews, and Senior Research Director Tess Geers.
Central to the discussions was Oceana’s intention to set up its first African operational base in Ghana, a move both sides described as significant for strengthening marine resource management across the region.
Deliberations focused on enhancing fisheries governance, advancing Ghana’s Blue Economy Strategy, and supporting the effective implementation of the country’s new fisheries law.
Members of the Committee underscored the importance of ensuring that conservation-driven reforms are carefully balanced with the protection of livelihoods, particularly for artisanal fishers and coastal communities who depend heavily on marine resources.
The Committee expressed optimism that sustained collaboration between Parliament and Oceana would contribute to sustainable ocean governance, improved regulatory enforcement, and long-term food security.
The engagement is expected to pave the way for strategic partnerships aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s marine ecosystem while reinforcing economic resilience within coastal areas.
