The Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism has paid a working visit to Sunda Ghana Limited as part of its oversight mandate to assess and support industrial activities across the country.

The visit aimed to gain first-hand insight into the company's operations, understand the challenges confronting local manufacturers, and explore how the government can provide the necessary support to enhance their contributions to the national economy.

Welcoming the delegation, Mr. Wei Yea, Managing Director of Sunda Ghana Limited, delivered a detailed presentation outlining the company's operations, investment journey, and growth in Ghana.

He raised concerns about the negative impact of smuggling, particularly the influx of low-quality diapers, which forced the company to uninstall two of its production lines, leading to the layoff of about 350 workers.

Mr. Wei appealed to the Committee to intensify efforts in curbing illegal trade practices and to protect local manufacturers.

He reaffirmed Sunda Ghana’s commitment to producing high-quality goods and contributing to Ghana’s industrial development, but stressed the need for stronger policy interventions to combat unfair competition.

Chairman of the Committee, Mr Alexander Roosevelt Hottordzie, praised the management of Sunda Ghana for their transparency and acknowledged the company’s vital role in job creation and industrial development.

“A lot of things are happening in Ghana, unfortunately, we are not always aware of them.

That is why the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mr Mahama Ayariga, has tasked Committees to use this short recess to go into the field and gather data that will inform the President’s decisions as he resets Ghana,” he noted.

Mr. Hottordzie emphasised the need to protect and expand the operations of local industries like Sunda Ghana.

He said supporting such companies aligns with President Akufo-Addo’s 24-hour economy policy, which seeks to enhance productivity and stimulate economic growth through continuous industrial activity.

The Committee assured Sunda Ghana of its commitment to engage relevant authorities to address the smuggling menace and help create a more enabling environment for local businesses to thrive.
