Waste management giant Zoomlion Ghana Limited has issued a detailed clarification concerning its contractual relationship with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), following public discourse sparked by a letter from the Office of the President dated June 11, 2025.

In a statement released to the media, Zoomlion explained that the contract under scrutiny, related specifically to the Street Sweeping Programme, had simply reached its natural expiration.

Originally set to end in March 2024, the contract was extended for six months, officially expiring in September 2024.

The company emphasised that the expiration was not a termination or cancellation by the government, countering some claims circulating in the media.

“For over 19 years, Zoomlion has worked closely with successive governments on the YEA module.

Our relationship reflects mutual commitment to sustainable development and should not be misconstrued as having been abruptly ended,” the company said.

Zoomlion also clarified that the letter from the Presidency does not impact its other sanitation contracts or broader engagement with the YEA sanitation module.

Zoomlion expressed strong support for the government's push towards competitive procurement for future sanitation contracts.

The company noted that the recently expired YEA contract had itself been awarded through a competitive bidding process in 2019.

“We welcome the move towards greater transparency and look forward to participating in future procurement processes,” the statement noted, citing Zoomlion's unmatched technical capacity, operational reach, and innovation-driven approach.

The company further lauded the government’s commitment to improving remuneration for sanitation workers as part of ongoing reforms in the sector.

“We remain dedicated to promoting dignified and sustainable livelihoods for frontline sanitation workers across the country,” it stated.

Zoomlion also endorsed government-directed accountability measures, including an audit of payments and claims under the expired YEA contract.

The company pledged full cooperation with the process.

“As a responsible corporate entity, integrity, transparency, and value for money are cornerstones of our operations.

We believe these audits will help enhance public trust and service delivery,” the company affirmed.

Highlighting its growing Pan-African reputation, Zoomlion disclosed that 24 African countries are currently exploring partnerships with the company, seeking to replicate Ghana’s model of waste management and sanitation.

“These collaborations—ranging from MOUs to feasibility studies—demonstrate the strength of our model and Ghana’s leadership in environmental transformation,” the company said.

Zoomlion concluded by aligning its mission with President John Dramani Mahama’s "RESET" agenda, which prioritises Rebuilding, Equity, Sustainability, Empowerment, and Transformation.

“We reaffirm our commitment to partnering with government and stakeholders to create a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Ghana,” the statement concluded.
