Afia Schwarzenegger: 'Is the law different depending on who you are?'
Ghanaian socialite and outspoken commentator Afia Schwarzenegger has strongly criticised women's rights organisations, state institutions and the Ghana Police Service over what she describes as their silence regarding the alleged shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo.
Expressing her frustration, Afia questioned why a woman who reportedly survived an alleged attack in which more than 40 rounds of ammunition were fired by her younger brother, Israel Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, has not received the level of public support and institutional attention such a serious case deserves.
She also condemned the decision to grant Akofena bail, arguing that it is difficult to understand how a suspect facing such grave allegations could be walking free while the complainant continues to live in fear and deal with the emotional impact of the incident.
To support her argument, Afia referenced the case of Ghanaian rapper Medikal, who was remanded into prison custody after authorities accused him of displaying what appeared to be a firearm in a photograph.
According to her, Medikal simply posed with a gun for a picture yet was remanded, while in the current case, someone accused of firing multiple bullets and whose residence allegedly yielded firearms and several rounds of ammunition during a search has been granted bail.
She questioned whether Ghana's justice system applies the law equally to everyone, asking whether justice depends on the identity or status of the individuals involved.
Afia further challenged the authorities, asking whether they were waiting for tragedy to occur before taking decisive action.
"Do you want to see Hon. Adwoa Safo die before you act?" she asked.
The media personality then turned her attention to prominent women's rights advocates and institutions, questioning their silence over the matter.
She specifically mentioned Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, who currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff, and also questioned the absence of the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, a ministry Adwoa Safo previously headed. Afia also called out the Minority Women's Caucus and other advocates who are often vocal about issues affecting women.
According to Afia, the reported discovery of approximately 200 bullet casings in Adwoa Safo's vehicle should have triggered stronger public condemnation and a more forceful response from law enforcement agencies.
She insisted that Adwoa Safo has endured significant suffering while many people have remained silent, behaving as though nothing serious had happened.
Afia stressed that Ghanaians cannot continue to ignore a situation in which a woman's life is allegedly under threat and urged citizens to demand accountability.
She concluded by appealing directly to the Attorney-General to intervene by transferring the case from the lower court to a higher court, arguing that doing so would strengthen public confidence in the justice system and help ensure justice is served.
In her appeal, she called on Ghanaians to unite in demanding justice for former MP Sarah Adwoa Safo, insisting that the matter deserves urgent attention from both the legal system and the wider public.
