Black Sherif bounces back from a loss to win BET award

Mohammed Ismail Sherif Kwaku Frimpong, professionally known as Black Sherif, has finally lifted a BET trophy.

Last year, the singer-songwriter and rapper was nominated for the Best International Flow award but lost it to Gabonese French rapper Benjamin Epps.

Well, at the just-ended 2023 Black Entertainment Television (BET) Hiphop Awards, the Ghanaian star clinched this year's Best International Flow honour.

He made his way to the trophy triumphing over AKA and K.O from South Africa and Sampa The Great from Zimbabwe, Gazo and Ninho from France, Central Cee and J Hus from the UK, and Major Rd and Tasha & Tracie from Brazil.

When the Best International Flow accolade was introduced in 2019, Ghana's rap legend Sarkodie was the pioneer winner.

The next year, during the pandemic, Ghanaian British rapper Stormzy bagged the award.

The following year, 2021, a 19-year-old singer from Konongo, Ashanti Region, would score his first radio hits with First Sermon, Second Sermon and Second Sermon Remix featuring Burna Boy from Nigeria.

In 2022, when he released Kwaku the Traveller, the boy from the gold-rich Konongo community, Black Sherif, successfully broadcast his presence to international acclaim. He received the Best International Flow nomination but it was not his time to win, apparently.

It was to happen in 2023 on Tuesday night, October 3. The award ceremony, highlighting the golden jubilee celebration of Hiphop, was tapped at the Cobb Energy Centre, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. It is to be broadcast on Tuesday, October 10.

BET's Best International Flow Hiphop award recognises outstanding Black stars who are outside of the United States of America.

Meanwhile, the latest offering from Black Sherif, who is also the 2023 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) Artiste of the Year, is a double A-side single titled: Take Care of Yourself Blacko. It houses two pieces: Yaya and Simmer Down.

Below are their performance videos.
