Efya calls for castration of rapists, says jail alone is not a deterrent
Award-winning Ghanaian singer Efya Nocturnal has called for harsher punishment for rapists, arguing that imprisonment alone is not an effective deterrent against sexual violence.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Pidgin, the musician suggested that rapists should be castrated, describing the measure as a “drastic punishment” suitable for individuals who “abuse, harass and rape” others.
Efya criticised the current system, particularly the granting of bail, which she believes allows alleged offenders to return to society and continue abusing victims.
In Pidgin, she argued strongly that prison sentences or the fear of incarceration “never stop” perpetrators of the heinous crime.
She reiterated during the interview that castration should be considered as a concrete response to rape in society, stressing the need for measures that truly deter offenders.
Beyond the issue of sexual violence, Efya also spoke about the challenges women face in the music industry.
She noted that being a female artist is “not easy at all,” largely because men significantly outnumber women in the space.
Drawing on her years of experience and status in the industry, Efya said she is committed to “back” and “support” women, helping them navigate challenges and thrive in the male-dominated music scene.
