Kwabena Kwabena condemns growing materialism in modern relationships
Celebrated Ghanaian highlife musician and guitarist Kwabena Kwabena, known in private life as George Kwabena Adu, has raised concerns about what he describes as the increasing commercialisation of love and relationships.
Speaking during a radio interview on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the “Aso” hitmaker shared his thoughts on how financial expectations are gradually replacing genuine emotional connection between partners.
According to the singer, many people — particularly women — now treat relationships like business ventures, where affection is often measured by a person’s financial capacity.
“Love has become some kind of investment,” he said.
“You need to reach a certain level financially before you can prove that you love someone.”
Kwabena Kwabena argued that although earning money and providing stability are important, wealth should not be the main way love is expressed.
He stressed that true affection goes beyond material possessions.
“When you look at the love languages, none of them talks about money,” he explained.
“Sometimes we miss the point.
Everyone is already working hard and trying to make a living, but love shouldn’t be reduced to how much you can spend.”
The musician, however, clarified that he is not encouraging people to settle for partners who lack ambition or refuse to work. He believes both individuals in a relationship must be responsible and contribute to their own growth.
“I wouldn’t advise anyone to be with someone who is lazy or unwilling to work,” he noted.
“But the real issue is learning to be content and appreciating each other’s efforts.
That’s what truly sustains a relationship.”
