Mary Maame Tiwaa: Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo's legendary singer dies
Gospel singer Mary Maame Tiwaa, a beloved pillar of the Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo band, has passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, following a brief undisclosed illness.
For over three decades, Maame Tiwaa’s unforgettable and reassuring voice shaped the sound of worship in Ghana — resonating through churches, concerts, and countless recordings. Her soaring harmonies and emotive delivery became a defining feature of Asomafo’s ministry.
She lent her gift to some of the group’s most iconic works, including Wo Haw Ne Sen (How Bad Is Your Problem), Awurade Ka Me Ho (The Lord Is With Me), and Mensuro (I Shall Not Fear).
While Yaw Sarpong is celebrated as a legend in his own right, Tiwaa’s distinct backing vocals helped cement Asomafo’s place in Ghana’s Gospel music history.

Her most recent major appearance was at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), where she performed during the tribute to Yaw Sarpong — whom she lovingly supported during his period of ill health.
The family of Maame Tiwaa is expected to release further details regarding her passing and funeral arrangements in due course.
