My weight is hereditary, due to 'enjoyment' – Selina Boateng says 'go to the gym' comment irks her

Singer Selina Boateng is not in the least pleased when people pass comments about her weight and ask her to hit the gym.

She registered her displeasure on Accra 100.5 FM's midmorning show Ayekoo Ayekoo, Thursday, May 4, 2023.

Host Nana Romeo asked if there is anything that she is concerned about regarding rumours or public opinion.

“Something that upsets me anytime I hear it or see it online is, ‘Eii! You’ve become too big. Go to the gym’,” she answered.

Romeo called it body-shaming. She agreed, adding that: “When I hear that I get enraged.”

Speaking about herself in the third person, the Gospel music singer explained that her anger is because people who pass such unpleasant comments “don’t know why she’s like that.”

“Also, you don’t know whether it’s an advice from the doctor or whatever which is the reason behind how she is,” she added, insinuating that gaining weight could be at the instruction of a medical officer.

The award-winning artiste decried the insensitivity of people asking her to go to the gym when they see her.

“It hurts me when I hear that,” she said.

Being heavyweight, according to her, is hereditary.

“I’m naturally not slim – my mother and father [also] – I’m not a slim person,” she emphasised.

She said if she looked slimmer than currently, “perhaps I didn’t have much to eat then as I do now.”

“Due to that, I have to enjoy,” she added, exaggerating her pronunciation of ‘enjoy’ for comic effect.

She cited Romeo’s weight gain as an example of such “enjoyment”.

“My husband is alright with my looks,” the bilingual singer said in conclusion.

Selena Boateng's notable songs include Alpha & Omega, Medofo Pa, Ayeyi Medley, Abaso Bo, Oyonko Wawani, etc.
